Background

What role does SEAL play in work to improve attendance?

The correlation between low levels of attendance at school and attainment has been established and schools and local authorities are developing effective strategies to improve attendance. Schools have identified effective strategies to support the attendance of pupils by developing effective systems.

They are now looking to explore and develop their strategies further and are seeking to identify and ameliorate some of the underlying causes such as fear of bullying, feelings of isolation, anxiety and lack of motivation or engagement with learning. All of the social and emotional aspects of learning have a contribution to play in raising attendance, both by creating a social environment that is welcoming and developing the social and emotional skills that are required if pupils are to be fully engaged in their learning and other aspects of school life.
